I received a targeted offer in the mail for an American Express Premier Gold card with 50,000 bonus points after the first purchase, $175 annual fee waived first year.  A targeted offer simply means that a invitation code is included in the letter.  The bonus points got my attention.  I have seen 25,000 bonus and 75,000 targeted offer as well in the travel blog.  I haven’t decided to jump on this 50,000 offer or wait if I will get the 75,000 offer.  There are other offers such as the 50,000 AmEx Platinum with $450 which includes lots of benefits, TGP has a good run down of this card.

I have been researching which AmEx card is best for me.  What interest in an AmEx card is the points are transferable to many airline miles, this opens up more options to redeem flight especially with the current Delta 50% transfer bonus.  Since it’s not possible to transfer miles between airlines I can use the AmEx points to top off what I need to get a reward flight.  TGP wrote a good article on the AmEx rewards so I won’t go into much details here.

Earning points on the AmEx is not too bad either.

1) 3x points on flights.  This opens more ways to earn miles on flights as points are transferable to miles on 1:1 basis in most cases.  In contrast my UA Chase card will only give 3x miles on United flights only.

2) 2x points on gas & groceries.  This is the same as my UA Chase and Capital One Venture.

The RSVP code expires in June so I will have to decide to jump on this deal soon.

Update 2011-05-13:  There is even a better offer available for everyone.  50,000 after spending $500 in three months and no annual for 2 years!

Update 2011-05-23: This offer is no longer available, American Express has removed this link.

Update 2011-06-27: I signed for this offer, tried to get 75k bump as discuss in FlyerTalk but no luck. However, the 50k points posted very quickly after I met the spending requirement.
